Empirical study among journalists

Journalistic skills, competences, roles and values - this is the topic of the first empirical study conducted by the Media Survey Center team together with sociologists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The study is in line with the Center's goals and mission, namely, sustained monitoring and analysis of the country's media and communications processes to overcome the adverse effects of fragmented and inconsistent data that prevail in the first decades of the 21st century. Therefore, the team is oriented towards exploring topical issues directly among the journalistic community and with maximum representativeness. A detailed questionnaire was developed for email distribution to journalists from central and regional (public and commercial) media. The questionnaire is of a semi-structured type and covers topics related to the level of education, dominant skills and competencies, the roles of journalists in contemporary society, as well as their personal perceptions of the (mis)application of professional and ethical standards in journalistic practice.

The survey results and analysis will be presented and made available to all interested parties by mid-2024.

The research is carried out within the project № KP-06-N75/6 from 07.12.2023, funded by the Scientific Research Fund at the Ministry of Education and Science.
